Edinburgh

Number one on our list is Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Boasting character and history, this lively city is full of surprises. From prime tourist spots like Edinburgh castle and the Royal Mile to restaurant festivals and captivating light experiences, there is something for everyone.

Located a pleasant 50 minutes train journey from Glasgow city centre, Edinburgh is the ideal tourist hotspot for those looking to embrace authentic Scottish culture and to endure some sight-seeing. If you happen to be visiting throughout the summer, be sure to book yourself tickets to some of the exciting events hosted at the infamous Fringe Festival, which typically runs throughout the month of August.

Highlands

Venture out into the great outdoors and embrace the mainlands of Scotland in its purest form. Discover intriguing architecture, breath-taking landscapes, culture and history as you treck through Britain’s largest National Park.

The Lake District is especially fitting for students looking to escape the stresses of day to day life as you can choose to stay in some of the most stunning water facing hotels in the area. There is no better way to get up close and personal with nature than a trip to the highlands. Be sure to take your camera as you will capture picturesque views and if you are lucky, you may even cross paths with one of our famous highland cows.

St Andrews

If you are looking for a relaxing Scottish getaway that offers some of the most popular golf courses in the world, take a trip up to St Andrews, the friendly seaside town located on the east coast.

If money is no option, live the life of luxury with a relaxing stay at the five-star Old Course hotel. Massage away the stresses of university life as you rejuvenate yourself at the outstanding spa facilities located at the hotels premises. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along the West Sands where you will encounter silky sand banks with dunes and calming waters, which extends out for almost two miles on the eastern coastline of Fife.

Loch Lomond

Hop on the bus from Glasgow city centre to Loch Lomond to experience incredibly sea views and beautiful scenery. The bus journey takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes, making it the perfect Scottish getaway for any student. If it’s a sunny day, be sure to pack your hiking boots and head to the Trossachs National Park.

In the evenings, cosy up by the fire in one of the local pubs with a delicious meal or enjoy a round of refreshing drinks after a long day of hiking. What better way to catch up with your group of friends about your days adventures?

    1. Dear James,

If you plan on visiting the cities (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen...), I'd recommend to simply use public transportation as there are daily trains and buses that are quite cheap!

But if you have a full day and want to see more things, then I'd definitely recommend taking a tour, as you don't only see many places but also get a lot of anecdotes from your tour guide! I recommend Discover Scotland that has quite a nice selection of one-day bus tours. If you are interested, a full review will be posted next Tuesday (28/02) for the Stirling Castle & Loch Lommond National Park one (33£ for students!)

About the time of the year, then I'd say it depends on how much you plan on staying outside! If you wanna take long walks or have a nice picnic by the loch, then I'd recommend waiting until it gets a bit warmer. But if you are doing a bus-tour, they'll make sure to keep you warm all day long! ;)

PS: Thanks for your comment, you're awesome! ;)
